Christmas letter from the chairman

Dear Ericsson sailors!

Another year has elapsed and we can look back on a good year for the Club.

We’ve had a sailing event on the infamous “Lilla Värtan” and more recently, we’ve had the Ocean sailors visiting us.

From a sailing perspective, the year 2016 got the main headlines from the Olympic Games. Sweden wasn’t that successful this year and it is, of course, a bit different to sail in an environment dominated by the press and TV instead of being able to focus “on your own thing”. Competition spends months on this, years in advance, and the Swedish team, though very costly, isn’t even close. But that’s far away from our normal sailing experiences.

To sail over the ocean – the Atlantic was described in the meeting – is something we all could do. It is, however, a lot of work before going out on the sea. The advice was that you should update your present boat as you know it so well. To buy a boat for such a purpose is, of course, a good idea, but the sailor has to get acquainted with it. The most important thing is to decide when you are to leave, then the planning can be done.

For the Sailing Club, the end of the year has become a bit turbulent as we will lose two member of the board. They have asked for and received the “package”. Even though they are more than welcome to remain on the board (on board!), it would be good to review the interest from regular employees to fill in.

Please contact us if you are interested!

So, we’ll meet soon on our yearly meeting at Älvsjömässan (2017-03-04—12).

All the best wishes for the Christmas weekends and the coming new year 2017!

Happy Sailing,
Donald Bratt

Ocean sailing evening on Nov 29th

Jan and OlaTen members showed up to learn about long distance sailing from the Swedish Ocean Sailing Club (OSK). Jan and Ola from OSK shared both their own experiences and facts about the club with great enthusiasm.

Some facts about OSK

OSK has about 700 active members. Lots of activities are on the agenda with different types of gathering almost every week during the winter season and a monthly magazine.

Training for members is arranged on relevant topics such as an introduction course on ocean sailing, radar training, VHF and SSB radio and Spanish for sailors!

Jan presenting his journey

Jan gave us an inspiring summary of his project to cross the Atlantic and cruise the Caribbean. Even though at home during the Hurricane season, the trip lasted more than two years.

Jan ended with convincing us that we can all do a trip like this. It’s more about making a decision and setting a date to really make it happen. To be well prepared and have a proper review of the boat is essential, but Jan sailed with a relatively small (31 feet) and 35 year old boat!

Sailing event in September

Erisson Sailing Club invited members to a beginners evening in September. Two of our members, Bo and Francesco, signed up for the event and practised their skills with Donald on his boat Sjöjungfrun, Folkbåt F-SWE-1358.

The weather was great and we had a very nice evening on Lilla Värtan just outside Djurgården. This was Bo´s first time sailing but he showed great talent when he steered around the island Fjäderholmarna.

Franscesco already had experience from Gunnars Seglarskola but enjoyed the opportunity to practise his skills and learn some new.

We had a great time and hope to do this again next year with more members and boats!
